Henri Friedrich Hemy
HEMY, Henri Friedrich. b. Newcastle upon Tyne, 12 November 1818; d. Hartlepool, County Durham, 10 June 1888. Born to Roman Catholic German parents (the name is pronounced ‘Hemmy’), he was educated at Newcastle and became organist of St Andrew’s Church (Catholic) in the city. He taught at Tynemouth and then at Ushaw College, Durham. He published Easy Hymn Tunes with the Words in full, adapted for Catholic Schools (1851) and a highly regarded instruction book for the piano (1858). He is chiefly known for the Crown of Jesus Music (Parts I-III, 1864; Part IV added in subsequent editions).
